THE US Consul General in Kolkata, Mr. Henry V Jardine, today said that his office had asked Washington for the appointment of a foreign commercial officer in Kolkata. Apart from Delhi, US consulates in Chennai and Mumbai already had such an officer.
The foreign commercial services (FCS) promotes business relationship by educating US business people on local procedures, arranging meetings and providing critical support during the initial phase of assessing the viability of doing business in a foreign country.
Addressing a meeting with the Bharat Chamber of Commerce here, Mr. Jardine said he was happy about the initiative taken by the West Bengal Government in attracting US investment to the state.
He said the US consular section in Kolkata processed more than 24,000 visas every year. This was against the nearly 400,000 visas processed in the entire country every year. India ranked second worldwide in the volume of US visa applications, he added.
