Education Mysore varsity to start information management school Our Bureau
Bangalore , Sept. 16 THE University of Mysore has announced the launch of International School of Information Management (iSIM) in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh, International Institute of Information Technology-Bangalore and Informatics India Ltd. Ms Shalini R. Urs, Director, Information and Communication Division, University of Mysore, will head the institute. She told Business Line, "We will be sourcing faculty from the University of Pittsburgh over the next two months." The iSIM will join the international consortium of information schools. Ms Urs was here on Thursday co-ordinating a summit called Infovision 2005. Infovision 2005 is a two-day summit aimed at creating policies and frameworks for creation of information and distribution. It is targeted at the information and knowledge community. "The Government is revising the information policy and inputs from this seminar would add value in this direction," said Mr Shankaralinge Gowda, IT Secretary, Karnataka Government. Dr Subhas Pani, Chief Secretary, Orissa Government, also speaking at the event, felt that systematic aggregation and extraction of information was still not available and better information and knowledge management would be critical to governments. At the event, Mr Mohan Tambe, Managing Director, Innomedia Technologies, revealed a new gadget, the CHOISer. This is a two-way infrared (IR) remote, which costs Rs 300 and allows the user to participate in interactive TV shows. Mr Tambe defined it as "one human interface that allows you to articulate in any language". Other topics that emerged were the need to create a framework for information professionals and what were the challenges to be encountered. The institute will offer a two-year masters course in Information Systems Management beginning in January 2006. The curriculum would be in tune with that being offered at the University of Pittsburgh and University of Michigan. The Ford Foundation, New York, has provided the initial capital through a grant.
