IT East 2005: KPO to get special emphasis

Our Bureau

Kolkata , Sept. 16

IT East 2005, being organised here on September 23 and 24, by the Confederation of India Industry (Eastern Region) will seek to showcase the potential in the fast-growing, high-value, knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) business, with special emphasis on the eastern region.

Addressing a news conference here today, Mr V.V.R. Babu, Chairman of the CCI (ER) IT Sub Committee, said there had lately been a shift in focus from the traditional business process outsourcing (BPO) to knowledge intense business processes by companies. While the success of BPO outfits could be largely attributed to India's strength in providing low-cost manpower, the success in the KPO arena would be based on India's inherent strengths in the knowledge sector, with its pool of professionals such as doctors, lawyers, engineers, research analysts and accountants.

Mr Babu said Indian companies were attempting to move up the value chain with a view to differentiating themselves from the rest. In fact, with its large pool of qualified professionals, India has the potential to garner a 70 per cent share of the $17 billion global market in KPO by 2010.

According to him, eastern India, with available expertise in areas such as engineering, education, life sciences, accountancy, market analysis, publishing and law, was well poised to play a leadership role in the KPO sector.

As such, IT East 2005 would focus on moving up the value chain with special emphasis on KPO as the new paradigm for ITeS companies.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr G.D. Gautama, West Bengal's Principal Secretary for Information Technology, said a total of 67 BPO companies were operational in the State. Of this, 35 companies had already graduated to the KPO space.

The State Government would play a facilitative role to ensure that companies in West Bengal could fully leverage on their "differential advantage" and garner a larger chunk of the global KPO pie, he said.
