Southern Rly introduces Interactive Voice Response System

Our Bureau

Chennai , Sept. 16

SOUTHERN Railway has introduced an Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) to address bill queries that its suppliers might have. Through the telephone based enquiry facility, Southern Railway's suppliers can get the current status of their bills in English, Hindi or Tamil through the IVRS.

The facility is available during the working hours of the Office of the Financial Advisor and Chief Accounts Officer, Stores and Workshop, Southern Railway, Perambur, according to a Southern Railway press release.

At the inaugural on Friday, Mr Thomas Varghese, General Manager, Southern Railway, demonstrated how the facility works. "Indian Railway has been a pioneer in computerisation of services," said Mr Varghese. "Payment facilities have been computerised for customers, freight operations, and now for the suppliers."

Southern Railway started making electronic payments for their transactions in 2003. "In August 2003, we implemented the payment of our employees' salaries electronically, and in September of the same year, for the suppliers," said Mr M. Jeychandren from the Office of the Financial Adviser and Chief Accounts Officer, Stores and Workshop, Southern Railway. "And now IVRS will provide them with all the supply related information. The next step will be to provide the same through e-mail and SMS," he added.
