Security As IT security concerns rise, so do UTM devices Our Bureau
Bangalore , Sept. 18 UNIFIED Threat Management (UTM) appliances are becoming popular among users beset with security concerns. UTM, which entails the integration of security solutions on one platform, deals with all kinds of threats. According to International Data Corporation (IDC), UTM revenues are expected to outpace those of the traditional firewall and Virtual Private Network (VPN) appliances sector, which has 58 per cent of the global share. UTM devices deal with threats such as URL filtering, access control, intrusion prevention, Internet Protocol (IP) security and gateway anti-virus. Firewalls are the basics in perimeter security, while a VPN allows one to work from a remote location by sending data over the Internet using secure tunnelling protocols. UTM devices are soon expected to include VPN capability. "UTM is a relatively new concept in security," said Mr Ajit Sankar, Manager Software and Services Research, IDC India. With UTM, customers will be able to buy one complete security solution from a single vendor. US-based Fortinet is the only company ready with products and holds 49 per cent of the UTM market share in India, stated IDC.
