The Hindu Business Line : 2-pronged strategy to tackle naxal issue in AP

The strategy includes active implementation of development programmes in naxal-infested districts to wean away potential recruits from the clutches of various outlawed groups and strong law and order enforcement to check their violent activities.

Speaking at the Chief Ministers' Conference on Naxal issue in New Delhi today, Dr Reddy said: "As part of the development strategy, the State has requested the Centre to extend the coverage of Rural Employment Guarantee Programme to all the naxal-affected districts while enlarging scope for institutional credit facilities for rural poor in these districts."

According to a statement from the Chief Minister's office, Dr Reddy said that 10 armoured vehicles are being provided to the State to face the problem of landmines.

He said that his strategy of encouraging surrenders of naxalites is bearing fruit; so far, 257 have surrendered this year.

For strengthening law and order enforcement machinery in the State, the Government is establishing two new greyhounds training centres in Kurnool and Vizag and 1,500 special police officers are being recruited specially for intelligence gathering. Two battalions are being raised to strengthen the police force.

As part of the strategy to develop the naxal-affected areas, a new department of remote areas development has been created and food for work programme, road construction, and irrigation projects are being taken up in affected areas.

The Government is also encouraging the formation of youth employment societies in each district to train youth, at an expenditure of Rs 20 lakh per district. During the last six months, 7,332 youth have been trained and 2,277 provided with employment.
