Cotton Cotton output seen at 255 l bales next season CAB fixes this crop year's production at 243 lakh bales Our Bureau
Mumbai Sept. 20 , THE Cotton Advisory Board (CAB) on Tuesday estimated a higher cotton crop of around 250-255 lakh bales (of 170 kg) for the next season 2005-2006 (October-September) over the current season's expected final crop of 243 lakh bales. Output during the current season 2004-05 has finally been put at 243 lakh bales as against 179 lakh bales in the previous season 2003-04, as estimated by the CAB meeting held here, according to an official of Textiles Commissioner.
Total acreage under cotton in the country is projected at 90 lakh hectares for the next season compared with 89.2 lakh hectares for 2004-05 and 76.3 lakh hectares in 2003-04. For the current season, the combined crop in the northern region (Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan) is estimated to be around 43 lakh bales, higher from 30.5 lakh bales in 2003-04. In the central region (Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh), the total crop is estimated to be 141 lakh bales compared with 100.65 lakh bales. The total crop in the southern region (Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka) is estimated to be around 46 lakh bales (36.09 lakh bales). Crop estimates for 2004-05 were raised for Gujarat to 73 lakh bales (from the previous season's 50 lakh bales), Maharashtra 52 lakh bales (31 lakh bales), Madhya Pradesh 16 lakh bales (19.65 lakh bales), Andhra Pradesh 32.5 lakh bales (27.14 lakh bales), Karnataka 8 lakh bales (4.2 lakh bales), Tamil Nadu 5.5 lakh bales (3.75 lakh bales), Punjab 16.5 lakh bales (10.35 lakh bales), Haryana 15.5 lakh bales (11.5 lakh bales), Rajasthan 11 lakh bales (9.15 lakh bales) and others 1 lakh bale (1 lakh bale). The CAB's estimate for 2004-05 has opened with a carryover stock of 21 lakh bales. With production at 243 lakh bales and imports estimated at 12 lakh bales, the total availability will be 276 lakh bales. On the demand side, mill consumption is seen at 163 lakh bales, consumption by SSI units at 17 lakh bales, non-mill consumption at 13 lakh bales and exports at 10 lakh bales, bringing the total demand to 204 lakh bales.
