Mixed performance by infrastructure sector

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Sept. 20

EXCEPT power, coal and crude oil production, other infrastructure sectors recorded significant growth during July, compared to the same period in the previous year.

"However, all sectors, except cement and refinery production, missed their targets set for the month," according to a release by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

Except coal, finished steel, railways, cargo handled at major ports and fertilisers, other sectors exceeded their targets for the cumulative April-July period, the release added.

In a report, after a review of the infrastructure sector's performance, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation said while upgradation/construction of roads exceeded the target by 46.3 per cent, import cargo handled crossed the target by 43.4 per cent during April-July 2005.

The report expressed concern that coal production remained nearly 4 per cent below target, finished steel production 12 per cent less than the target, revenue earning rail freight traffic 1.2 per cent, shipping 0.7 per cent and fertilisers 9.2 per cent.
