A disruption in the western grid on Wednesday saw large areas of Mumbai, Thane, western Maharashtra and some areas of Vidarbha go without power for a few hours. The Mumbai airport also went without power for 45 minutes.
Mr Ram Dotonde, spokesperson for the Maharashtra State Electricity Board, told Business Line that the Parli-Chandrapur 400-kV line tripped at 9.55 a.m. This had a cascading effect on the Parli-Lonikandi and Parli-Solapur lines, which led to power failure in the region. The reasons for the failure are being looked into, he said.
In Mumbai, power supply was affected in areas such as Santacruz, Andheri, Navi Mumbai and Thane. People in offices and educational institution had to suffer the most. The power supply by Reliance Energy, a major supplier in the suburbs, was also disrupted.
Mr Vivek Devasthali, spokesperson for Reliance Energy, said the power failure occurred at 10.00 am and electricity was fully restored by 1.45 p.m.
