Railways plans to review old traffic facility works

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Sept. 21

THE Railway Ministry has called for stalling those traffic facility works that are not needed in the present context.

A need-based assessment would now be done of all the sanctioned works that have been going on for over five years.

According to a Railways statement, all General Managers (of various zones) have been communicated to review "all such old (more than five years) sanctioned works... to assess their need in the present context and if it is felt that some works are no longer required, proposals for dropping these works should be sent to the Railway Board by November 30."

Out of the 370 on-going traffic facility works, 70 are more than five years old, with the oldest being of 1990-91, it said.

To achieve 700 million tonne (mt) freight loading target and bring down the operating ratio from 91 per cent to 85 per cent by the end of the current financial year, the Ministry of Railways has sent a communication to general managers of all the zonal railways asking them to indicate the steps taken by them in this regard for October.

Appreciating the work done by most of the Zonal Railways to increase the growth rate in `other coaching' and `sundry earnings' in the last two months, the Railway Ministry has stressed upon the need for stepping up their efforts further.
