SCR takes up tracks restoration

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Sept. 21

THE South Central Railway (SCR) has taken up restoration work following heavy rains in several parts of the State, damaging the track at many places.

Initial estimates have put the loss to the Railways in the range of Rs 50-60 crore, including the loss of revenue of Rs 5 crore a day due to non-operation.

Damage to tracks had led to cancellation and detainment of several trains.

About 30 trains stood cancelled on Wednesday evening.

The SCR hoped to run the Hyderabad-Visakhapatnam-Hyderabad Godavari Express and Secunderabad-Kakinada-Secuncerabad Gautami Express on Thursday once the single-lane traffic was restored.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr D.N. Mathur, General Manager of the SCR, said the New Delhi-bound Tamil Nadu Express, detained at Dornakal Junction for just over 24 hours, was put on course on Wednesday morning.

Of the seven breaches, four were reported near Dornakal Junction.

About 25,000 cubic metres of earthwork was needed and they could do it only once the water receded completely.

Our Kolkata Bureau adds: Rain in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa has disrupted South-Eastern Railway's train services on the East Coast section. Breaches have been caused on railway tracks in South Central between Vijayawada and Kazipet, and Rajahmundry and Visakhapatnam.

According to an official release by SER, as many as seven South-bound long-distance trains have been cancelled/controlled today and tomorrow.

The cancelled Up trains for today are Howrah-Hyderabad East Coast Express, Howrah-Chennai Coromandel Express, Howrah-Chennai Mail, Howrah-Yashwantpur Express, Howrah-Nagercoil Gurudev Express, Alleppey Link Express from Tata, and Dhanbad-Allepey Express from Dhanbad.

The Up Howrah-Secunderabad Falaknama Express, which left Howrah this morning, has been short-terminated at Balasore, and it will run back to Howrah as Special Train from Balasore. The Up Howrah-Tiruchi Express leaving on Thursday has been cancelled.

Similarly, the corresponding Down trains, such as Chennai Mail (leaving on Tuesday), Coromandel Express, scheduled to leave today from Chennai Central, Falaknama Express, leaving on September 20 and the Trichy-Howrah Express, scheduled to leave Chennai-Egmore on September 20, arriving Howrah on September 22 have been cancelled.

According to SER, all trains coming from Southern as well as South Central Railways via Visakhapatnam today and tomorrow will be controlled at different stations en route, and will therefore reach Howrah late.

The South-bound trains leaving Howrah on September 22 may also start late from the originating station.

All passengers have been asked by SER to contact the following numbers for enquiry: 033-26602217, 033-24396191, 033-24504225/4122 and Toll Free No. 10721.
