Campco launches new products

Puttur , (Dakshin Kannada) Sept. 21

CENTRAL Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd has launched three new products — one each in chocolate, semi-finished cocoa and arecanut segments — in the domestic market on Tuesday. With these products, the cooperative wants to increase the retail base for its products in all segments.

With its `Fadcha' brand of arecanut, the cooperative has made an attempt to provide value-added arecanut to panwallahs — the largest segment of white arecanut users. Introducing the brand at Puttur in Dakshina Kannada district, the Campco President, Mr L.N. Kudoor, said that now a panwallah can directly mix this arecanut pieces with the pan. The product has eliminated the work of cutting whole arecanut into pieces, he said.

Stating that the Puttur and Vittla branches are manufacturing this product, he said the cooperative would soon begin its production in the Sullia and Badiadka branches also.

There were orders for five loads of `Fadcha' brand of arecanut on the first day. Officials in Campco's arecanut marketing division said that the product has good demand in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Bihar, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Campco experimented with `Fadcha' 20 years ago, but it did not take off then.

To boost market for its chocolate products, the cooperative has come out with `Fun Tan' chocolate, which is rich in cocoa, and bitter in taste. The demand for less-sweet chocolate products prompted the cooperative to go in for this product, Mr Kudoor said.

Considering the demand for semi-finished cocoa products among housewives and bakery owners, the cooperative has launched small packets of cocoa powder. The cooperative already supplies large quantities of cocoa powder to various chocolate manufacturers, and now wants to cater to the retail segment, Mr Kudoor said.

The cooperative decided to introduce these products after conducting a survey on cocoa and arecanut products in the country, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, the former Campco President, Mr K. Rama Bhat, said that the cooperative has nearly 10 per cent market share in finished cocoa product segment. It has a major share in the semi-finished cocoa product segment, he added.
