Off-shore Development Sigma Micro sets up centre in Kochi Our Bureau
Kochi , Sept. 21 SIGMA Micro Corporation, a US-based software developer, is setting up its first offshore development facility at Infopark here as it plans to move a significant part of product development to India in future. The $13 million Sigma Micro Corp., headquartered in Indianapolis, plans to develop a new software product for the clothing retail industry from the Kochi unit, said Mr Albert H. Langsenkamp, CEO. "In 18 months a new product will be entirely developed in India. This product will eventually be sold and supported out of India," Mr Langsenkamp said here at a press conference. The Indian offshore development centre has been set up under a subsidiary, Ind-Sigma Infotech Private Ltd. Currently Ind-Sigma has 24 people and another 15-20 people will be added over the next six months. Ind-Sigma has taken a 5,000 sq.ft. facility in the `Thapasya' building and invested Rs 3.3 crore in setting up the centre. Mr Langsenkamp said if the company grows at 50 per cent annually, the Indian arm would have 200 people and generate a revenue of Rs 29 crore in five years. Investments worth Rs 15 crore will also be made during this period, he said. According to Mr K.G. Girish Babu, CEO of Infopark, the arrival of a product company like Sigma Micro Corp. would give a major boost to Kochi's efforts to attract quality software companies. "Product companies are more stable and bring with them high technology. This will immensely help Infopark and Kochi," Mr Babu said. Sigma Micro Corp. had evaluated Bangalore, Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad before zeroing down on Kochi to set up its facility. Technology companies are also increasingly moving out of bigger cities to address issues such as rising expenses and employee attrition.
