Mr Alexander J. Gray, COO, Extreme Networks

Chennai , Sept. 21

EXTREME Networks, the $383-million US-based provider of telecom networking solutions, expects increased revenue from its Indian subsidiary in the next two years.

Extreme Networks India currently contributes around one per cent of the parent's revenue, and this figure is expected to increase to 6-8 per cent in two years, according to Mr Alexander J. Gray, Chief Operating Officer, Extreme Networks.

The decision to set up a centre in Chennai recently was to leverage the availability of large number of software engineers and not just to save money, he said. "We will move some of the work from the US to Chennai. However, we will not close down US centres and transfer work to India. The expansion of the Chennai centre would be in line with that of the US," he told newspersons.

The Chennai centre, the company's first development centre outside the US, develops and tests new software for global markets. The centre has 40 employees and this will grow to about 80 by June next year, he said.

Mr Gray, declining to detail the investment in the centre, said the company annually spent 14-16 per cent of its revenue on research and development, and a significant portion of this would come to Chennai. The fastest growth in terms of people for the company, which employs around 850 globally, would be in India, he said.

The global Ethernet, a standard for connecting computers into a local area network, market size is $14-18 billion, and Extreme Networks has a share of 5-8 per cent, Mr Gray said.
