Roadways Government - Policy CCEA clears road project for N-E Our Bureau
New Delhi , Sept. 22 CABINET Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Thursday approved a proposal for improving 7,639 km of road in the North Eastern region at an estimated cost of Rs 12,123 crore. The project would be implemented in three phases. Phase A is to be implemented at a cost of Rs 4,618 crore over a total length of 1,310 km in various North Eastern States under Special Accelerated Road Development Programme, the official spokesperson said here on Thursday. It would be implemented by National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), PWD and Assam Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and completed between 2005-06 and 2008-09. It includes four-laning of NH-37 from Nagaon to Dibrugarh (315 km) on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis and 288 km of National Highways 39, 40, 44 and 31A for connecting the capitals of Nagaland, Meghalaya and Sikkim with East-West Corridor under NHDP II on BOT basis. It also includes double-laning of 507 km of single lane stretches on nine national highways in Assam and improvement of the road from Lumla to Tashigong via Dudunghar (36 km) in Arunachal Pradesh. The existing single lane border lane from Gangtok to Nathula (56 km) in Sikkim would be double-laned as well. CCEA also gave its "in principle" approval to the extent of initiating action for the preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs) for the roads under Phase `B' and Phase `C'.
