New Delhi , Sept. 22

THE Union Cabinet on Thursday gave an `in-principle' clearance for the sites for setting up nuclear stations at Kakrapar in Gujarat, Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu, Jaitapur in Maharashtra and Rawatbhata in Rajasthan.

Commencement of pre-project activity at the sites, including land acquisition at the Jaitapur site, was cleared by the Cabinet, the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Mr Jaipal Reddy, told newspersons.

The Kakrapar and the Rawatbhata projects will have two reactors of 700 MWe (mega watts electrical) each and will use pressurised heavy water, while the Kudankulam and the Jaitapur projects will have two light water reactors of 1000 MWe capacity each.
