Climate & Weather Industry & Economy - Climate & Weather Wet weather in Goa, Konkan to continue Vinson Kurian
Thiruvananthapuram , Sept 22 KONKAN and Goa sloshed under some harsh wet weather on Thursday, but not the squirting rains of the July 26 kind even as the prevailing depression weakened into a well marked `low' and moved west-northwest into Madhya Maharashtra and neighbourhood. A weather update from the National centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) said that during the past 24 hours, fairly widespread rains with heavy to very heavy rainfall was reported from a few places in Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat and north Karnataka. Scattered light to moderate rainfall occurred in the Northeastern States and sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Orissa, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Marathwada and Vidarbha. Chief amounts of rainfall recorded (in cms) are: Panjim - 17, Mahabaleshwar -17, Dhanu -15, Nashik -11, Belgaum, Bhira and Ambala - 9 each, Mumbai - 8, Aurangabad - 4 and Ratnagiri - 3. The well marked `low' is predicted to move northwestwards for the next 24 hours and push north-northwest later on. Widespread rainfall with heavy to very heavy falls has been forecast for Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and south Gujarat for the next 48 hours. Moving expectedly north-northwestward further, the system will cause fairly widespread rains with isolated heavy falls over Gujarat, east Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh. A trough in lower tropospheric levels runs from the centre of the well marked `low' up to Bihar. This is likely to result in scattered rain over the eastern and northeastern parts of the country. A western disturbance in the form of a trough in the middle tropospheric westerlies is approaching northwest India. Predictions indicate possibility of interaction of the prevailing well marked `low' with the westerly system on three days from Saturday. This will lead to enhancement of rainfall activity over the region. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Damrey moving in west from the western Pacific was traced last to 370 nautical miles east-southeast of Hong Kong. Forecasts suggest the system crossing the South China Sea into Indo-China in about four days' time.
