THE Alkali Manufacturers' Association of India (AMAI) has demanded that the State Governments encourage captive power generation by alkali manufacturing units and not impose heavy taxes such ascess, electricity duty and other State levies that make captive power more expensive.
The AMAI also wants all taxes on input fuels and those imposed by the State Governments on captive power to be brought under VAT .
Addressing the 28th annual general meeting of the association, its President, Mr S.K. Agarwal, said that currently, the industry is functioning at 85 per cent capacity utilisation because of the various difficulties faced by the manufacturers.
AMAI also suggested that the Government make available finance for the industry at five per cent lower rates than the normal rates of interest.
The association also stressed the need for allowing 80 per cent depreciation in the first year, at par with the pollution control equipment for conversion of highly polluting mercury cell plants into membrane cell plants under the income- tax rules.
Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary of the Ministry of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Ms Satwant Reddy, also stressed on the need to replace mercury technology with membrane technology.
She also expressed concern over the small percentage of exports of caustic soda and soda ash despite the Government providing various incentives such as Duty Drawback, Duty Exemption Advance Licensing Scheme, DEPB, DFRC etc.
