CRUDE oil and natural gas production in August this year saw a dip when compared to the corresponding period last year. Production of crude oil was down 16.1 per cent in August this year to 2.412 million tonnes (2.874 million tonnes).
Natural gas production declined by 2.5 per cent to 2,595 million cubic metres (MCM) in August (2,661 MCM), mainly due to fall in output from the Mumbai High offshore fields which came down to 1,302 MCM, according to the latest figures released by the Petroleum Ministry.
The decline in crude oil production was due to a devastating fire on July 27 at an oil facility in Mumbai High field. The production from Mumbai High offshore region fell to 1.08 million tonnes in August (1.55 million tonnes).
For the period April-August 2005, crude oil production went down to 13.587 million tonnes (14.221 million tonnes).
However, natural gas output rose 1.4 per cent to 13,266 MCM in April-August.
Refinery production, however, was better in August at 2.952 million tonnes, but showed a decline of 1.8 per cent to 52.243 million tonnes for the April-August period.
According to official data, the refineries operated at 99.6 per cent of their rated capacity in August and at 97.9 per cent in first five months of the current fiscal.
While the performance in August this year was better than that in August 2004, capacity usage in April-August was lower than that in the same period last fiscal.
