`Bandwidth to have exponential growth in India'

Bangalore , Sept. 23

TRIPLE play - the streaming of voice, video and data over the Internet Protocol (IP) is the future. With broadband prices dropping this year, we will soon be able to avail of such a service from a single vendor, a `digital' service provider. Mr Craig Chatterton, Country Manager, SupportSoft India, said, "There is potential for high penetration of broadband in India."

At present, voice and data over IP (also called VoIP) is in use by corporates more as a cost-cutting option than for necessity. Calls made over the Internet are cheaper since you only have to pay for the broadband you use, which is now ubiquitous. Yet, if you have used a VoIP phone, you will notice that the quality is not faultless. "Jitter, latency and packet losses over an IP network, which do not raise a problem with data, affect the audio signal to a large extent. This affects the conversation," said Mr Rich Matta, Senior Director of Development, SupportSoft, a real-time software service management company. California-based SupportSoft makes software that diagnoses and automatically fixes issues with the broadband connection. Mr Matta said, "Soon people will depend on broadband to a great extent, with the introduction of triple play and IP-TV."

He said, "Bandwidth will grow exponentially in India, and will be a driver for PC penetration." He said they were in talks with broadband providers such as Reliance, Bharti Broadband Networks Ltd and Tata Telecom. The company has a headcount of 325, out of which 70 are at Bangalore.
