THE future energy security of India is critically dependent on the supply of natural gas at reasonable prices, said Dr K. Narayanan, a former Chairman of Hydrocarbon Council of India.
Speaking on `Energy security in India with special reference to oil and natural gas' at a lecture organised by the Centre for Management Development-Thiruvananthapuram, he said that the supply of natural gas is more important to India's energy security than oil is. And, India is dependent on imports to meet its demand for natural gas for power generation, he pointed out. In fact, India will be importing much larger quantities of natural gas as the years go by, he added.
Against this background, it makes sense for India to enter into regional co-operation with nations such as Russia, China, Pakistan, Iran and Kazakhstan to ensure energy security, Dr Narayanan said. Similarly, there can be no better insurance for India's energy security than to make long-term arrangements with Iran for the supply of natural gas, he added.
While discussing India's energy security, it is also necessary to remember that the country does not have a proper energy policy in place at present, Dr Narayanan said. Though this situation has its drawbacks, it also means that an energy policy for the country can now be formulated based on public debate on the whole set of issues that confront the sector, he added.
