Railways Eastern Railway freight, passenger revenues up Our Bureau
Kolkata , Sept. 23 IN the first five months of the current fiscal (April to August), Eastern Railway (ER) handled 18.846 million tonnes (mt) of revenue-earning freight traffic, representing an improvement of 1.974 mt over 16.872 mt handled in the same period of the previous year. Coal accounted for the largest share as much as 14 mt while other items included stone, petroleum products, steel, cement and food grains, according to a press release issued by ER. At this rate, ER, as the release indicates, is likely to end the current fiscal with a throughput higher than last year's (2004-05) 42.3 mt. The earnings from freight traffic during the period amounted to Rs 538.66 crore (Rs 422.13 crore), an increase of Rs 116.53 crore. The number of passengers carried by ER during the period was 33.76 crore (30.71 crore), registering a 10 per cent increase. The earnings from passenger traffic at Rs 398.78 crore (Rs 357.82 crore) showed a rise of 11.5 per cent, the release added.
