Singapore varsities' road show to woo Indian students

Our Bureau

Chennai , Sept. 24

TO cash on the middle class Indian dream of studying overseas, Singapore has started wooing Indian students.

Seventeen education institutions are on a road show in India to promote Singapore's vision as a `Global Schoolhouse.' Currently, there are 66,000 international students in Singapore compared to 57,000 in 2002. The target is to host an international student population of 1.5 lakh by 2012. Singapore is especially attractive to students from Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, China and India.

The road show started here on Saturday and will be open on Sunday also. The second stop will be at Bangalore, followed by Mumbai, Delhi and Ahmedabad.

The participants include the National University of Singapore, the Nanyang Technological University, (NTU), NTU's Nanyang Business School and the Singapore Management University.

Two recent additions to Singapore's education scene — the Cornell-Nanyang Institute (CNI) and the University of New South Wales-Asia, are also present at the road show. Speciality schools such as the Lasalle-SIA College of Arts, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and Raffles Design Institute offer certificate, diploma and degree courses in arts, management, fashion design, and interior and jewellery design. According to the Education Guide handbook 2005, the fees for international students at the three local universities for the academic year 2004-05 was S$19,350 (about Rs 5 lakh) for non-laboratory based courses (accountancy, arts and social sciences, business, law and mass communication).

The tuition fees for laboratory-based (architecture, building and real estate, industrial design, computing, engineering, pharmacy and science) courses are S$21,350 (about Rs 5.5 lakh). The fees for dentistry and medicine are S$80,800 (Rs 21 lakh). Tuition grants are also available to outstanding students.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Indian International School, Singapore offers K-12 (kindergarten to 12th standard) education. The school is affiliated to the CBSE, New Delhi and the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO), Geneva.
