Standards & Benchmarks Manufacturing meet calls for quality, excellence Our Bureau
Dr J. J Irani
Kolkata Sept. 24 INDUSTRY captains, outlining the challenges before corporate India to achieve higher levels of manufacturing capabilities to arrive at the double digit GDP growth, veered round to the view that greater inclusiveness (creation of more jobs) has to get projected in our growth process. While Dr J.J. Irani, Director, Tata Sons, said the CEOs of today's corporate India need to drive the changes towards quality and excellence in manufacturing, and for which they need to form a good team, Mr Jamshed N. Godrej, Chairman and Managing Director, Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Co Ltd, said two important areas of immediate reforms in manufacturing were a uniform VAT rate in all States and move towards reduced paperwork by all Government departments. Providing his mantra for achieving `double digit inclusive growth' at the interactive session on `Manufacturing East' by the Confederation of Indian Industry here on Friday, Dr Irani said the Indian environment was much better today and the outside world seems to be having more confidence in India now than we ourselves have. Dr Irani added, "we, however, need to change our mindset to move towards that quest for excellence and quality." Outlining the broad strategy to achieve this, he said excellence and quality now mean everything in today's scenario of customer being the king, if one has to stay competitive at all times. According to Mr Godrej, even though infrastructure does play a critical part in some businesses, many Indian companies have now truly emerged as global suppliers, and this was a creditable achievement. He also called for a proper fiscal regime to enable the industry, particularly the manufacturing sector, to stay competitive.
