Petroleum India, Japan looking at co-operation in hydrocarbon sector Our Bureau

New Delhi , Sept. 24 INDIA and Japan are looking at a possible cooperation in sharing experiences in the hydrocarbons sector. India will be looking to share Japan's expertise in research and development initiatives, efficiency and conservation measures resulting in reduced consumption of fuel, and refining heavy crude, a Petroleum Ministry official said. A high-level Japanese delegation led by the Director-General, Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Mr Nobuyori Kodaira, met the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar, here on Friday. The delegation later participated in a joint working group meeting. According to the official, a joint statement on areas of co-operation between the two countries in the hydrocarbon sector will be announced during the Petroleum Minister's two-day visit to that country on Wednesday. India and Japan both are large consumers of fuel, but Japan has been able to check fuel consumption it with its energy efficiency and conservation measures, the official said adding that India can learn from Japan about the use of unconventional energy. Japanese expertise in on refining heavy crude oil and extraction can prove to be useful for the Indian oil companies, the official said.
