Tea industry calls for aggressive promotion

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , Sept. 25

TEA industry representatives from seven countries have called for aggressive promotion, focusing on the health benefits and its cost effectiveness as the key factors to survive in the post-WTO era.

The delegates were here to attend a programme on Advance Management sponsored by the Government of India under the "Colombo Plan". Members from the Tea Board, tea research institutes, Government offices and private industry from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Malawi, Indonesia, Nepal and Myanmar, besides India took part in the session conducted by the Plantation Management Academy.

Pointing out that researchers all over the world, including from the advanced labs of the US, have highlighted the positive health effects of tea on the consumers, the delegates underscored the need for a massive education of the people in both the producing and consuming countries. Aggressive promotion through all possible channels and supportive marketing strategies alone will help the tea industry survive the competition.
