Cashew Cashew exporters seek benefits under farm scheme Our Bureau
Kochi , Sept. 25 THE Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPC) has appealed to the Union Government to allow Vishesh Krishi Upaj Yojana (VKUY) benefits for cashew exports from April 4, 2004, without imposing any restriction. Addressing the 50th annual general meeting of the council here, Mr P. Bharathan Pillai, Chairman, CEPC, said: "It is disappointing that cashew exporters have been denied a legitimate incentive in respect of exports effected from April 4, 2004 to March 31, 2005 and beyond the period April 27, 2005." The eligibility of cashew for VKUY announced earlier in the Foreign Trade Policy 2004-09 " gave an impetus to our exports which grew from Rs 1,804.43 crore in 2003-04 to Rs 2,709.24 crore in 2004-05". The industry factored the declared incentive to the kernel price and this resulted in an excess export of 25,839 tonnes during 2004-05 over the previous year resulting in 1,03,35,600 additional man-days of employment to cashew factory workers, he said. The AGM has elected Mr Walter D'Souza of Fernandes Brothers, Mangalore, as Chairman of the CEPC, and Mr Babu Oommen, Alphonsa Cashews, Puthoor, Kollam (Kerala), as Vice-Chairman.
