Good demand drives prices at Kochi tea sale

A GOOD general demand resulted in the spurting of prices of almost all varieties of tea at the Kochi tea auction.

Of the quantity of 10,83,000 kg on offer in the dust category, high priced CTC's were lower by Rs 10 to Rs 15. Medium CTC's were lower by Rs 8 to Rs 10, while bottom CTC's were lower by Rs 3-4. Orthodox grades remained steady to dearer.

As per the figures made available with Forbes, Ewart and Figgis Pvt Ltd, the best CTC varieties commanded prices between Rs 60 and Rs 72, medium CTC realised Rs 48-50, below medium were quoted Rs 20-28. Highgrown BOPD fetched prices between Rs 85 and Rs 112, while medium BOPD realised Rs 32-38.

The leaf sale also witnessed a good general demand and the quantity on offer was 3,89,000 kg. Orthodox highgrown brokens and Fannings were steady to dearer. Smaller brokens were barely steady, while other mediums and secondaries were steady to dearer. CTC best quality smaller varieties remained steady, while others were barely steady to irregularly easier. Orthodox teas witnessed a fairly good demand from exporters.

The best Nilgiri varieties commanded best prices of Rs 57-83, while medium Orthodox realised Rs 37-49. The best CTC leaf fetched prices between Rs 42 and 48, while medium CTC's were quoted at Rs 34-37.

In the dust category, Kodanaad Cl.BOPD realised the best prices of Rs 112 followed by Parkside Cl.BOPD by Rs 85. In the leaf varieties, Chamraj OP fetched the best prices of Rs 109 followed by Havukal Cl.BOPF by Rs 104.
