A memorandum of understanding for a three-year programme to provide educational and nutritional support to tsunami-affected children in the country was signed between the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) and the Bharat Soka Gakkai recently.

Under the programme, relief will be provided to children who have lost one or both parents.

Concentrated in Tamil Nadu and the Andaman and Nicobar islands, the programme will address the needs of the school-going children from the fishing community. Apart from payment of annual school fees, provision of uniform, notebooks and stationery, the programme will also provide supplemental nutrition.

MSSRF will identify such children in consultation with the Government and other agencies. It will also locate the local school or NGO that will receive funds on behalf of these children.
