Chennai , Sept 26

MAXELL Singapore, a fully-owned subsidiary of Hitachi Maxell of Japan, makers of batteries, storage media and mobile communication devices, has established an office in Chennai.

The office will serve as a sales promotion and marketing hub for Maxell's products including computer tapes, optical media, micro-batteries and other consumer products, according to a press release.

Mr Kamemoto Masaru, Chairman, Asian Global Sales and Marketing, Maxell, and representative of the Chennai office, told mediapersons at the launch that India's constantly improving economy makes it an ideal place for Maxell to open an office. Countries such as Brazil, China and India have gained a lot of importance in the worldwide economy, he added.

Mr Kamemoto said that the market for mobile phones in India is also large, with 60 million subscribers at present, and therefore the market for mobile phone batteries is also good.

And with mobile phones improving both in terms of capacity as well in functions, Maxell will focus on its mobile communication devices.

With increasing worry about safety, and also with the need for higher storage capacity, the two areas Maxell will concentrate on are storage capacity and safety, he said.

A new DVD-ROM drive that will have a storage capacity of 100 Gigabytes, five times that of the DVD-ROM with the best storage capacity in the market now, is in the pipeline, he said.

Maxell has distributors in Delhi and Mumbai, and is not planning to expand the distribution network in India as of now.
