Hyderabad , Sept. 26

THE ruling Congress party in Andhra Pradesh has recorded a landslide victory in the municipal elections by bagging 74 out of the total 96 municipalities and nine out of 10 municipal corporations for which elections were held on Saturday.

The key Opposition party Telugu Desam (TDP) could manage to win only 10 municipalities, while the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) won only two municipalities. Others including CPI, CPI (M) and MIM won the remaining 10 municipalities.

Addressing a press conference after the results were announced, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said the civic poll outcome has not only reflected reinforcement of public support to Congress party but also endorsed the pro-poor policies taken up by his Government.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister vowed to implement with renewed vigour all the promises made by his party at the last Assembly polls during the remaining term of his Government.

According to him, the people's verdict reflects the performance of his Government in the last 16-month period.
