Fact-finding team to visit Kudremukh mines

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Sept. 26

AN eight-member fact-finding team of the Jaya Sri Krishna Parisara Premi Samithi will visit Kudremukh on September 28 to assess environmental pollution there.

Addressing newspersons here on Monday, Prof B.M. Hegde, President of the Dakshina Kannada unit, said iron ore deposits are found across 604 sq. km. in the Kudremukh region. However, Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd (KIOCL) is mining only in 4 sq. km. of the area. "It means that only 0.66 per cent of the total iron ore deposits are being mined now," he said. There is no fear of chemical pollution in the area, as KIOCL is using `open-mining' technology there. Since some non-governmental organisations have expressed concern over environmental pollution in the region due to mining, the team will study it in detail.

Prof Hegde felt that the sudden closure of mining operations in Kudremukh region might cause problems, both social and environmental. The team's report will be submitted to the Government and the Supreme Court.
