New Projects Industry & Economy - Coal Coal India chief for expediting approval for new projects Our Bureau
Kolkata , Sept. 26 THE Chairman of Coal India Ltd, Mr Shashi Kumar, has urged the Union Government to expedite the official clearance process for new coal projects to enable coal companies maximise their production. He said the perceived coal demand-supply gap would be widened as the state-owned companies were finding it difficult to take up new projects due to non-availability of land and delay in environment & forest clearances. Inaugurating a seminar on `Bridging the demand-supply gap for Indian coal industry', organised here on Saturday by the Mining Geological and Metallurgical Institute of India, Mr Kumar said the country had huge reserves of fossil fuel (coal), but production would not improve beyond a certain level due to lack of proper `supply management' of the fuel. Though Coal India raised an additional 70 million tonnes (mt) of production from its mining facilities in 2004-95, and had plans to produce 90 mt more during the current year, the CIL Chairman was not sure whether its subsidiaries would be able to maintain their production target after a few years unless they were given the opportunity right now to begin developing new projects. He suggested that a "single window" policy be followed by the Union Government for clearing new coal projects. He said serious efforts should be made to look for alternative energy sources as dependence on coal-based power beyond a point would not be desirable.
