Science & Technology CCMB opens advanced spectroscopy facility Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Sept. 26 THE Director General of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Dr R.A. Mashelkar, on Monday inaugurated a spectroscopy and proteomics facility at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB). According to CCMB, the setting up of an advanced spectroscopy facility would greatly help its ongoing efforts in understanding how infectious parasites enter cell membranes and how they escape human immune responses. It would also help in understanding the causes of cataract formation, certain neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease and depression and many other works relating to human diseases and in understanding the molecular dynamics of living cells. The Director of CCMB, Dr Lalji Singh, said, "this facility will be a major boost to the CCMB's research and development programmes as well as providing services to the industry in safety evaluation of biotech products such as insulin, interferon and vaccines." The centre is working on tools that would help in better healthcare and intends to extend these facilities to the biotech industry. Proteomics is essentially the study of total cellular protein present in living cells. It is a new generation, often termed futuristic technology. Studies relating to proteins would help in mapping in more detail, the difference between two types of cells. For example, normal and cancer cells can be mapped with focussed studies. These studies would help us better understand the cause of diseases and also identify novel diagnostic tools for early detection of the disease and in developing new drugs. This facility is considered the first of a kind in Asia.
