New Delhi , Sept. 27

THE Government is planning to involve the private sector in the development of 30 non-metro airports, in addition to the six metro airports that will also be developed through public private partnership (PPP) initiative, the Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, said here today.

"The 30 airports that we have identified are cities where the growth will come from. We plan to go in for a PPP initiative where the private sector will be involved with the development of the city side of these airports," the Minister said while addressing an interactive meeting organised by the Young FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO).

Commenting on the moves to modernise and restructure the airports in Delhi and Mumbai, Mr Patel said he expected the successful bidders to be identified "no later than November this year and have the airports ready in both the cities by 2010."

The Minister said that the Government was also taking all steps to ensure that the strike call given by the employees of Airports Authority of India on September 29 did not affect the functioning of airports.

"We are a democracy. I have held a dialogue with the AAI workers and will continue to hold dialogues to ensure that some solution can be found," Mr Patel said.

The AAI Joint Workers Forum has threatened to go on strike on September 29 to protest against the modernisation of the two airports, a move that could affect air services around the country.

"We have a contingency plan ready to avoid any hardship to passengers," the Minister added.
