THE reported resignation of Mr C. Anjaneya Reddy, Chairman of Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC), has raised eyebrows in tourism circles.
Sources in the APTDC told Business Line that he had put in his papers expressing unhappiness over "non-cooperation" from above.
Dr J. Geeta Reddy, Minister for Tourism, however, said that she was not aware of the move by Mr Reddy. "He is quite a capable man. We will extend all support to him," she told newspersons at the launch of the cruise, Khair-un-nissa, on Tuesday.
The sources said that the Chairman has made up his mind and "he may not relent."
The latest provocation for Mr Reddy, they said, was the recent appointment of Mr J. Raymond Peter as Managing Director, replacing Mr T.V.N. Rao, without his knowledge.
Mr Reddy used to hold the posts of both Chairman and Managing Director. A general State Government decision last year left him with the Chairman post.
Mr Reddy is credited to have rebuilt and revamped the APTDC. His efforts changed its fortunes. From a loss-making body, it soon became a profit-making one.
Its image, too, changed for good. Besides improving the brand image of the corporation, he focused on building infrastructure, exploring heritage tourism potential, and tourism in rural areas.
He also played an important role in setting up the National Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management to produce quality human resources for the burgeoning demand for the tourism and hospitality industries.
Yet another important contribution was tapping the Buddhist tourism potential by identifying Buddhist sites in the State and selling the idea to Buddhists outside India.
