THE Minister for Water Resources, Mr Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, today said that work on the detailed project report (DPR) for the Ken-Betwa river link was started a few days ago. "Work on DPR started about 15 days ago with the DPR preparation expected to cost Rs 40 crore," he said at a conference. The entire river link project is expected to cost approximately Rs 4,500 crore.
However, no decision had been taken yet on the source of funding, he added.
On the status of the Ken-Betwa interlinking project, Mr Dasmunsi said the Government had asked for the preparation of DPR in 24 months and it would consider all aspects, including environment and displacement rehabilitation, at the DPR stage itself.
The DPR to link Krishna with Godavari at Polavaram was also under progress. "The present Government would prioritise river interlinking projects in peninsular India only. None of the river links of the Himalayan region would be attempted till they are discussed clearly with the neighbouring countries," he said.
Briefing newspersons on the recently concluded three-day meeting of the Joint Rivers Commission (JRC) in Dhaka, Mr Dasmunsi, who headed the Indian delegation, said an important outcome of the JRC was that it had created `goodwill and trust' between the two sides on several issues. India agreed to provide information on flood forecasting 66 hours in advance instead of the present 42 hours in the case of Brahmaputra, and 67 hours in advance in Farakka instead of 41 hours through e-mail.
