A SURVEY on `Barriers to blood donation' has shown that the State Government needs to launch awareness programmes for blood banking services, including donor motivation, in order to ensure adequate availability of safe blood.
Conducted under the auspices of surgicals major Terumo Penpol, the survey suggests that efforts should be directed towards recruitment and retention of voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors through education and awareness programmes. Coercion of any kind was disfavoured in enrolling replacement blood donors.
Instead, replacement donors could be `encouraged' to become regular voluntary blood donors. NGOs should also be encouraged to raise awareness about blood donation among the masses.
All blood banks should ideally have a donor recruitment officer/donor organiser. Each blood centre should create and update a blood donor's directory. In order to increase the donor base, campaigns must be launched to involve the youth.
The survey suggests an action plan to promote voluntary blood donation. Misconceptions, fear complex and prejudices have to be removed scientifically by showing that blood donation is harmless to the donor.
New donors must be recruited to expand the donor base, retained and made regulars. Outdoor blood donation camps must be organised and a panel of rare group donors and on-call donors maintained. Care should also be taken to see that donors, donor organisations and blood banks keep in touch regularly. Blood transfusion service also calls for donor recruitment and donor retention.
