Production at Tirupur knitwear industry hit

Coimbatore , Sept. 29

PRODUCTION in the knitwear industry in Tirupur was paralysed by the 24-hour industrial strike as over 90 per cent of workforce in the town joined the strike.

Most of the business houses there did not work today in view of the strike.

Textile trade bodies in Tirupur said the one-day loss of production due to stoppage of work in hosiery industry would be around Rs 15 crore.

Most exporting units, which have the delivery schedule to maintain, are said to have managed to keep up their production schedule by having extended working hours on Wednesday.

In Coimbatore, the strike had hit partially the working of textile spinning industry, especially in areas where the Left trade unions have a strong presence. At least four city-based National Textile Corporation (NTC)-owned textile units were affected by the strike, the AITUC-affiliated Coimbatore Mill Workers Union General Secretary, Mr Arumugam, said. Engineering units concentrated on the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam road were also affected by the strike.

Airport normal: Almost all the morning flights except the Air Deccan's Coimbatore-Mumbai flight operated through the Coimbatore airport as the strike had little impact on the normal functioning of the Peelamedu airport here. The Air Deccan flight bound for Mumbai was grounded here due to technical snag, the sources at the Peelamedu airport said.

Regular operations at the airport were conducted with the help of executives; and as a contingency measure, the Indian Air Force personnel were also kept at the disposal of the airport duty. "None of the airport activities was affected due to the AAI employees strike," said Mr Vijay Kumar, Airport Director.
