Landslide in AP affects goods traffic

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , Sept. 30

TRAFFIC on Kothavalasa-Kirandul (K-K) railway line has been disrupted following a landslide on Wednesday night in the vicinity of Chimidipalli railway station.

According to railway sources, a huge boulder hurled onto the railway track around 9 p.m. or so due to heavy rains, resulting in extensive damage to it.

For the past fortnight, there have been heavy rains in the north-coastal Andhra districts due to successive cyclones and depressions. The movement of trains on the line has been stopped since Wednesday night and the track restoration work is going on briskly. According to railway sources, the authorities are encountering difficulties in blasting the huge boulder and are requisitioning heavy cranes from National Mineral Development Corporation at Kirandul.

The rains are also posing a problem to the authorities and it may take a few days to restore traffic, it is learnt. The K-K rail line has been laid specifically for transporting iron ore from Bailadilla mines to Visakhapatnam, for use by the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and high-grade pellets and also for export through the port.

A passenger train is also operated early in the morning on the K-K line to the picturesque Araku valley for tourists from Visakhapatnam. That train also has been cancelled.
