Special tea sale of 142 finalists of Golden Leaf India award

L.N. Revathy

Coimbatore , Sept. 30

THE United Planters Association of Southern India plans to announce a special tea sale featuring the 142 finalists of the `Golden Leaf India Awards'. The sale is expected to take place in Kochi on October 18 and 19.

UPASI Secretary General, Mr Ullas Menon, told Business Line: "Even when these 142 entries moved to the second round of the contest, we suggested a special auction for the winners. Now, we are planning to take all the teas that entered the final round, instead of the 43 that had been short-listed for the award. But we have learnt that some of these teas have already been sold."

Trade sources confirmed that the bidding process was over for some of the teas. Though there has been no immediate reflection in the tea price movement, the general mood at the auction appears to have improved as better quality teas are said to be flowing in.

Meanwhile, a delegation has taken samples of the 43 winning entries to China for display at an ongoing fair there. These include seven entries from High Ranges, five from Travancore belt, six from Wyanad, four from Anamallais region, seven from the Nilgiris, three from the bought leaf sector, six from Karnataka and other regions, and five in the organic tea category.

When asked why Kochi was chosen as the centre for the special auction, a trade source said it was considered the lead centre for sale of dust and orthodox teas. "Since the volume of dust is relatively higher, Kochi has presumably emerged as the centre for the special auction," he said.

P.S. Sundar reports from Coonoor: Darmona Tea Industries, based in Aravenu off Kotagiri in the Nilgiris, has bagged all the three awards for the best CTC teas in the Nilgiris district category at the Golden Leaf Awards competition. It emerged as winner in the leaf, fanning and dust categories.

The Darmona estate brand of the company has been fetching the highest prices among the CTC teas of bought-leaf factories at the Coonoor tea auctions for long.

Havukal Tea and Produce Co P Ltd emerged as winner in the orthodox whole leaf and fanning categories. Craigmore Plantations (I) P Ltd bagged the awards in orthodox broken and dust categories.

Hittakal Estate Tea Factory bagged two awards for the bought-leaf factories. It emerged as winner in CTC leaf and fanning categories. Riverside Tea Plantations got the award in CTC dust category.

Prizes were also awarded for High Ranges, Travancore, Wynaad, Anamallais and some planting districts of Karnataka. There were separate awards for organic and green tea as well.
