Chennai , Oct. 1

THE development of Tamil Nadu's industries in the last few years is nothing short of an `economic miracle', according to Mr Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology.

Addressing the annual general meeting of the Hindustan Chamber of Commerce on Friday on the theme `Advantage Tamil Nadu, he said the IT and telecom industries were mainly responsible for the miracle.

However, Mr Maran said the State still had a long way to go in terms of infrastructure. He said the development of the six-lane IT corridor should not take more than 12 months, but judging by the current progress, it would take at least 18 months. He added that the investment being made in mega-flyover projects was long overdue.

"Mr T.R. Baalu (Union Minister for Surface Transport and Shipping) has promised the flyover at the Kathipara junction will be completed before the Nokia manufacturing centre, currently under construction in Sriperambudur, is fully functional."

Mr Maran said Mr Bill Gates, Chairman and Chief Software Architect, Microsoft, could visit Chennai in December.

Mr A.C. Muthiah, Chairman, Southern Petrochemical Industries Corporation (SPIC), said it was the Chamber's role to voice the concerns of industry entrepreneurs fearlessly.
