Chennai , Oct. 1 THE Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, on Saturday released a commemorative postage stamp featuring A.M.M. Murugappa Chettiar, the man who started some of the thriving companies of the Murugappa group, such as Carborundum Universal and Tube Investments of India. A.M.M. Murugappa Chettiar (1902-65) served as the President of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (1949-50) and was a member, All Indian Council for Technical Education. He was a philanthropist who set up several hospitals and educational institutions in Tamil Nadu. Today, these are administered by the A.M.M. Foundation. Speaking at a function held to release the stamp, the Chairman of the A.M.M. Foundation, Mr M.V. Murugappan, recalled the strict financial discipline that his uncle, A.M.M. Murugappa Chettiar, used to impose on the executives and family members. Mr Murugappan reminisced on how he was told to account for every penny of the money he received from the family, when he was studying abroad. In his speech, Mr Maran said in a lighter vein that the secrets of success of the Chettiar community ought to be written down and published as a book. He said that in a country like India, cycles were still an instrument of transport, and added that he was happy that the Murugappa group produced cycles that the common man could afford. Ms Vatsala Raghu, Principal Chief Post Master General, Tamil Nadu Circle, said that the postal department was happy to bring out commemorative stamps on achievers like A.M.M. Murugappa Chettiar.
