ICRISAT develops chickpea hybrid

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Oct. 2

SCIENTISTS at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) here have developed a chickpea hybrid, which is resistant to disease and boosts yields.

The hybrid is a cross between a regularly cultivated variety (cicer arietinum) and a wild species (cicer bijugum). Chickpea is the world's third most important food legume. Poor and marginal farmers in the semi-arid tropics depend on it. Announcing the development here, Dr William Dar, Director-General of ICRISAT, said, "The wild species used in the crossing had many desirable characteristics such as resistance to Ascochyta blight, botrytis grey mould and to Helicoverpa — the menacing pod borer."

Dr Dar said, "Some of these traits are expected to occur in the hybrids. Crossing the cultivated and wild chickpea is expected to produce a hardy plant that will be able to stand up better to harsh weather and pest attacks," he said.
