`Step up raw cashew kernel output'

Panaji , Oct. 2

CASHEW manufacturers have sought urgent attention of cultivators and the State Governments to plan the strategies needed for increasing raw cashew kernel production in India as shortfall of raw material continues to be one of the major problems of the industry.

Speaking at the three-day `India Cashew Convention' the Chairman, Cashew Exports Promotion Council of India, Mr Walter D'Souza, said as against the 1.5 million tonnes installed capacity of cashew processing in the country, today only 5.5 lakh tonnes of raw material was available in addition to the 5.8 lakh tonnes of raw material which was imported.

This still left a shortfall of around 4 lakh tonnes. On the exports front, he said that they were growing steadily at around 10 per cent. Last fiscal year saw an all-time quantum jump of around 15 per cent with Rs 2,717 crore of exports.

The cashew industry will organise a cashew festival in December in Goa to popularise cashew nut, particularly highlighting its health benefits, said Mr A. Surendra Kamat, President of Goa Cashew Manufacturers Association.

The Chief Minister, Mr Pratapsing Rane, who inaugurated the convention attended by around 200 delegates, cautioned the industry not to be complacent about the labour cost advantage it gets in processing sector and urged it to invest back in both, innovative processing technology as well as in cultivation.

The convention was organised by commodity research and advisory firm Foretell Business Solutions and Karnataka and Goa Manufacturers' Associations.
