Survey sees fall in soya yield

Our Bureau

Chennai , Oct. 2

A SURVEY carried out by the Soyabean Processors Association of India for the second time on the prospects of soyabean crop has pegged the production at 57.5 lakh tonnes, marginally lower than trade projections last year.

But more important finding of the survey is that the yield this year is likely to be around 750 kg a hectare from last year's 812 kg and 1,074 kg in 2003, one of the best witnessed by both the industry and growers.

Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra, to an extent, are the States, which are helping a better yield this year, while in Madhya Pradesh, the soyabean hub of the country, the yield is likely to be 722 kg against 780 kg last year.

As per the survey, in Madhya Pradesh a dry period was witnessed during the flowering stage in Malwa and Nimar regions. This could affect the yield, though late rains in early September could come hand for the crop.

But the crop could suffer a damage of 5-7 per cent as against the initial survey, which foresaw a 30-35 per cent damage.

In Maharashtra, it is the floods that is seen affecting the crop in Nanded and Parvani districts, while heavy rains in Kholapur and Sangli districts has led to higher moisture content in the crop. As a result, 20 per cent of the crop would be producing average yield only.

In Rajasthan, 24 per cent of the crop are seen yielding below average due to scanty rainfall and moisture stress during sowing.

Good rainfall in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka is expected to benefit the crop, while the crop is seen normal in Chhattisgarh.
