National meet on tobacco in Hyderabad

Hyderabad , Oct. 2

THE Indian Society of Tobacco Science (ISTS) is organising a four-day national conference on tobacco with the theme of `Scientific strategies for sustainable growth of farm economy and export' here.

The conference would begin on October 4 at the Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University. The Indian Tobacco Association (ITA) and the Tobacco Board joined ISTS in organising the conference.

All stakeholders representing research and development, farmers, trade and industry would take part in the conference.

"India, second after China, in terms of tobacco production, is losing out to Brazil. We need to make concerted efforts," Mr V. Jagan Mohan, Secretary of Indian Tobacco Association (ITA), said.

The reason for this could be increasing interest of multinational corporations in the Brazilian market. "Here in India, the farmers are endowed with small chunks of land," he said.

In 2004-05, India exported 160 million kg of tobacco worth Rs 1,300 crore. Exports were growing at 10-12 per cent.

Though India exported to 35 countries, Western Europe was an important market, followed by East Europe, Southeast Asian countries and West Asia.

The domestic consumption had remained static. Anti-tobacco campaigns would have impact on the consumption, he agreed. The conference would also deliberate on the alternative usages of tobacco.
