Education Second phase of Akshaya to get under way in Kerala Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , Oct. 2 THE State Government is all set to launch a project that would take the Akshaya e-literacy project to seven more districts. The pilot project has been running in Malappuram where it was introduced quite sometime back. A spokesman for the Kerala State IT Mission said here that when implemented, the second phase of Akshaya rollout would take the State one step forward in its quest to become the country's first fully e-literate State. To get the project moving, the IT Mission is setting up a training programme for more than 5,000 e-literacy instructors in the seven districts from Wednesday. The trained from this programme will in turn proceed to train an estimated 35-lakh people who are residents of these seven districts. These sessions will commence in November in the chosen districts of Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kollam and Pathanamthitta. The faculty for the training programme comprises of experts from the Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT), the IT@ School programme and the Centre for Development Studies (CDS). A 15-hour long audio-visual programme covering the entire gamut of e-learning will provide the core theme for the training programme. The audio-visual in CD format was initially prepared for the district of Malappuram. The latest version of the CD has incorporated feedback received from the experience of Malappuram. The IT Mission is also organising an Entrepreneurs Orientation Programme in the seven districts from October 10 to 22. This programme is aimed at giving the entrepreneurs a clear perspective of the possibilities under the Akshaya programme. Management and technical experts with proven track record will handle the sessions. The selection of entrepreneurs for starting Akshaya e-centres has not been completed, the spokesman clarified. Under the Akshaya project, e-literacy programme and computer training was extended to 5.8 lakh people in Malappuram. Implementation of the project in seven more districts will add another 35 lakh people to rolls of neo e-literates.
