AP Govt pegs crop loss at Rs 939 cr

THE State Government has estimated that the total crop loss during the recent cyclonic storm was about Rs 939 crore and assured that relief and rehabilitation work would be expedited.

The State Minister for Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation, Mr Dharmana Prasada Rao, said that about 3,33,758 hectares of agriculture crops have been damaged due to recent cyclone resulting in floods across the State.

Making a statement in the State Legislative Assembly on Monday, Mr Rao said that 40,740 hectares of horticulture crops too were damaged during the cyclone.

The State Government has enhanced relief assistance for crop damages by 25 per cent under the existing norms. About Rs 15.75 crore has been released so far towards agricultural input subsidy.

However, members of the opposition parties demanded that this be raised to 50 per cent.

Following a representation by the State Government to the Prime Minister about the loss caused due to floods, a Central team toured the State from September 26 to 29.

The State submitted an additional memorandum of understanding indicating a loss of Rs 2,697.97 crore.

The Centre was requested to provide assistance of Rs 506 crore towards immediate relief measures and Rs 1,964 crore for permanent restoration of damaged infrastructure.
