Mangalore , Oct. 4

ONE hundred and fifty four contract workers, who were earlier working for Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF) Ltd through an agent - have withdrawn their strike following a settlement with the management on issues related their compensation.

Addressing presspersons, Mr Jabbar Khan Honnali, Dakshina Kannada District in-charge Minister, said the issue was settled between the management of MCF and contract labourers at a meeting, which concluded in the early hours of Tuesday, in Mangalore.

According to the settlement, the management will have to pay Rs 2.5 lakh extra for each of the 154 contract labourers in addition to the amount they are legally entitled for.

As per the decisions taken at the meeting, both the management and the contract labourers agreed to withdraw the cases filed against each other.

All the 154 contract labourers will be paid the amount by October 10, after they fulfilled the conditions before the Assistant Labour Commissioner, he said.

The Bantwal MLA, Mr B. Nagaraj Shetty, who was present at the press conference, said these contract labourers - based on their service and experience - will get compensations ranging from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 6 lakh.

Mr P.C. Jain, Director (Works) of MCF, who was present on the occasion, said the company would have to disburse around Rs 6.8 crore in the form of compensation, including gratuity and provident fund, to these contract labourers.
